Volunteering in Nepal :
Volunteers in Nepal have been contributing to constructive and rewarding projects for over 12 years. From caring for children in street shelters to helping preserve and enhance the conservation of some of the country’s most spectacular mountains, volunteers in Nepal are given the chance to experience the stunning sceneries, smiling faces, and welcoming nature of Nepalese lifestyle, whilst being part of a sustainable and worthwhile project at the same time.

Volunteers in Nepal with Aroundthehimalayas have the opportunity to take part in a diverse range of volunteer projects and internships. These include working with children, teaching, medical and healthcare placements as well as community-based conservation projects.

With our head office situated in the capital city Kathmandu and full-time staff also located in Chitwan, Pokhara and throughout the small villages where our conservation projects are situated, volunteers in Nepal are given the assurance that they will be well supported by our full-time staff in making their stay as productive as possible.

Like any volunteering project, initiative, creativity, enthusiasm and hard work will be key in creating a rewarding experience and our local staff are there to help and support volunteers with their work every step of the way.

Since the end of a 240 year autocratic rule in 2006 Nepal and the implementation of Nepal’s newly elected leadership in 2008, Nepal is currently going through a tentative and trying transition phase from Monarchy to democratic state. Nepal also remains very poor (ranking in the bottom 20 poorest countries in the world). This is especially the case in mountainous and rural locations where access to services such as schooling and healthcare is limited.

Volunteers in Nepal are offered opportunities in hospitals, schools, care centres and rehabilitation centres based in and around the wider Kathmandu area.  We also offer professional medical placements in Chitwan, a picturesque location located approximately 6 hours by bus from Kathmandu. Volunteers in Nepal can also take part in conservation projects in the Annapurna Mountain range. Based in the middle of amazing scenery home to snow leopards, black bears and musk deer, the project is situated in a number of local villages around 5-6 hours’ drive from Pokhara – Nepal’s second largest city.

Many of our projects also work with established social welfare organisations and charities, ensuring that your experience is part of a worthwhile and on-going programme.

Volunteers on conservation projects live in guest houses at villages throughout the mountain range. Each village is also home to local offices where the work for that area is managed. All villages monitor the wildlife population and often volunteers can experience several villages on their project. Most other volunteers will be placed in a host-family within the region that they are placed. Living with a family gives you the opportunity to live, eat, drink and sleep like a local, while meeting other volunteers and making friends from all around the world who are experiencing the same sensations of Nepalese life as you.

There are always volunteers in Nepal; so you will always have the ‘volunteer family’ around to help you settle in and make the most of your time.

While Nepal may seem like a cultural overload upon arrival, from the craziness that is Kathmandu, to the jungle areas in the Terai region to the beautiful scenery of the Himalayas, when volunteers welcome all aspects of Nepalese lifestyle with open arms, they soon become integrated and involved in local community life.

Volunteer in Nepal come to love the smiling faces of locals, learning about the fascinating history of Nepalese Monarchy and tasting local dishes such as dahl baht, making it a great location for volunteers of all ages and experience.
